São Paulo also moves to ban betting advertising
The city of São Paulo could become the next Brazilian capital to restrict advertising for betting platforms in public spaces. According to the Radar column in Veja magazine, Mayor Ricardo Nunes stated that he will sanction, on the same day of its approval by the City Council, a bill that prohibits advertisements from betting houses on outdoor media in the capital of São Paulo.
The proposal supported by the mayor's office is PL 560 of 2025, authored by councilman João Jorge, which has already received a favorable opinion from the Constitution and Justice Committee. According to the information, the text does not interfere with the operation of betting companies, which is the responsibility of the Union, but rather restricts advertising exploitation in the urban space of the municipality, and among the foreseen sanctions includes fines and even the suspension of licenses for those who violate the rule. The analysis in the plenary should take place after the parliamentary recess, at the beginning of August.
If approved, the country's largest city will follow the movement initiated by Rio de Janeiro, whose mayor's office published a decree prohibiting the advertising of betting platforms in public spaces and in private places subject to municipal authorization. The measure now applies to urban furniture, digital clocks, bus stops, taxis, shared bicycles, and other equipment under municipal management. Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere stated on social media that from that moment on, any outdoor betting advertising on the streets and public spaces of Rio de Janeiro is prohibited, and that the city, which is a showcase for the country to the world, cannot become an open-air gallery of betting houses as if that were normal.
Subsequently, Belo Horizonte also announced similar restrictions, prohibiting the dissemination of betting advertisements in public spaces controlled by the municipality and at events organized by public authorities. A few days earlier, the capital of Minas Gerais had been the scene of a debate on the presence of online betting advertisements in public transport, when the Minas Gerais Justice issued a decision ordering the removal of advertising for the Esportes da Sorte brand from municipal buses.
