A deputy demands information on the betting block in Chile
Deputy Roberto Arroyo sent official communications to the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications and the Superintendency of Gaming Casinos to request information on the implementation of the blocking mechanism for online betting platforms ordered by the Santiago Court of Appeals. According to the recent ruling by the court, which ratifies a previous Supreme Court judgment, the blocking involves the identification of domains, their validation by the superintendency, the subsequent instruction from the undersecretariat to internet access providers, and the blocking via domain name technology.
In the official communication addressed to the undersecretariat, Arroyo requested clarification on the date or maximum deadline for beginning to instruct the blockages once the list of validated domains is received, as well as the criteria that will determine how much time provider companies will have to execute them. He also asked for information on whether lists have already been received from the superintendency and how the sites subject to blocking will be periodically updated. In parallel, in the official communication sent to the superintendency, he requested to know which regulation enables it to validate the background information of the platforms to be blocked and to specify whether this function will be exercised exclusively in compliance with the judicial order. He also asked how many domains have been received, validated, and sent to the undersecretariat, and what human and technical resources have been allocated to this task.
The legislator maintained that it is not enough to announce that sites will be blocked; it is necessary to know when the mechanism will begin to operate, who will be responsible for each stage, and with what authority decisions will be made, arguing that it is a judicial order that must be executed with clear deadlines, coordination, and legal certainty. Arroyo also requested background information on the coordination of both agencies with other state institutions, in a context where Congress is processing the bill that seeks to regulate online betting platforms.
