Peru: propose to completely ban gambling advertising
A new bill in Peru proposes a total ban on advertising for betting, casinos, and online games across all media and public spaces. The initiative repeals existing authorizations and aims to reduce the exposure of minors and young people to content that encourages gambling.
A bill seeking an absolute ban on gambling advertising
The Peruvian Congress received Bill 13265, promoted by Congresswoman Susel Paredes, which proposes a comprehensive prohibition on advertising related to any form of gambling in the country. The initiative covers casinos, slot machines, in-person and online sports betting, as well as internet games.
The ban includes all formats of commercial communication, advertisements, promotions, sponsorships, and indirect advertising, both in traditional media (television, radio, print press) and in digital environments and public spaces.
The veto would also apply to public transportation, billboards, sports events, cultural shows, and any activity involving minors, one of the central focuses of the proposal.
According to the bill’s author, the goal is to limit the normalization of gambling among teenagers and young people, a phenomenon that has grown with the expansion of online sports betting.
What would change if Congress approves the law
If it advances, the law would also prohibit:
- Promotions that offer bonuses, chips, or incentives to bet.
- Commercial partnerships or sponsorships with betting operators at public or private events.
- The placement of gambling brands on sports teams, festivals, or audiovisual content.
One of the most relevant points is the repeal of Article 30 of Law 31557, which currently allows advertising only for companies authorized by MINCETUR. With the reform, not even licensed operators would be allowed to advertise their services.
Next steps
The bill will be reviewed by the corresponding parliamentary committees before reaching the Congress Plenary, where it will require a simple majority for approval.
If it becomes law, it would drastically transform the regulatory framework for gambling advertising in Peru, a market that experienced rapid growth following the widespread adoption of online sports betting.
